Net new space
Also: space contribution, new space
Net new space is the sales contribution from stores opened, enlarged, closed or reduced over the period, netted against each other. With like-for-like, it forms most of a retailer's organic growth bridge. A positive figure means added selling space produced sales; it does not show whether the new stores are profitable or whether they took sales from existing stores nearby.
Expansion teams are measured on the space they add and store operations on like-for-like, so growth from openings can cover a decline in the existing estate. Reading the two lines separately shows which one produced the result.
JD Sports' organic bridge splits the £44m organic decline into a like-for-like fall of £167m, 2.8%, and £124m, 2.1 points, from net new space, on a store estate 2.2% smaller at 4,766.
